Microalgae represent a bio-diverse resource (Metting, 1996; Pulz and Gross, 2004). The complexity of their chemical composition and range of biochemical products make these organisms exploitable resources for valuable and novel products in the food, feed, pharmaceutical and research industries (Pulz and Gross, 2004). The market for these applications is still emerging, but there have already been new areas of research in microalgal biotechnology to satisfy the new product demands of industry and consumers.
