Neighbourhoods of Peace; cities of hostility: exploring the socio-spatial dimentions of peace and place in the 21st Century and its implications for future cities

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the relationship between peace and place. It explores how the physical space facilitates or negates the establishment of peace through the manifestation of a specific function and form, as well as its meaning for urban residents. In order to investigate this relationship, it also reviews the concept 'piece of mind' and its connection with the nature and sense of place in cities. It argues for a socio-spatial understanding of peace and place and therefore for a multidimensional approach that would not only include peace making and peacekeeping, but also peace building and eventually conflict prevention.
