Abstract

Planning and design measures can be utilised successfully to enhance feelings of safety in areas where people feel vulnerable. The study of the relationship between crime and the physical environment has resulted in various theoretical approaches and a number of schools of thought have emerged since the early 1960's. Some of the more familiar approaches include Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), situational crime prevention and place-specific crime prevention.
