This presentation highlights the utilisation of low grade fuels in Fluidised Bed Combustors (FBC) with regards to South African coal. It looks at types of coals and fuels tested, test facilities and examples of FBC’s at the CSIR. Benefits from the research include the data availability on combustion thermal efficiencies (BFBC) to base economic decisions, the reduction in the amount of coal discarded on the surface, extending the lifetime of South African finite coal reserves, minimising the emissions of greenhouse and acid gases formed by spontaneous heating and combustion of coal discard, and providing energy from materials that are currently discarded and have already been mined/recovered.
