The report entails available historical information on Knysna estuary and abiotic and biotic characteristics found in the estuary are presented. The Knysna system is commonly referred to as a lagoon but it may also correctly be called an estuary. The upper sections above the National Road Bridge are strictly estuarine and dependant on the flow of the Knysna River, but while the rest of the system is largely a marine embayment, it maintains estuarine characteristics including a predominantly estuarine biota. The name Knysna for the river and the estuary has been used by all sources consulted, but the system has been variously referred to as an estuary, lagoon or embayment.
