Role of social science in global environmental change: case of urbanisation

Abstract

Global environmental changes, such as globalisation, involve accelerated interconnections and interdependent processes that require an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. Because human activities are most significant in their negative effects on global environmental changes, social science, which focuses mainly on understanding human activities, should be at the forefront of studies of global environmental change and in spearheading the correct responsive strategies. This poster demonstrates the role of social scientists in global environmental change by examining urbanisation and other environmental changes as suggested in the science plan of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP 2005)
