The project was focused on the development of guidelines for the training of operators using high risk underground coal mining machinery. During the survey conducted it was noted that the multi-ethic nature of the machine operators made training and instruction extremely difficult. It was however concluded that literacy is only an essential element should reading and writing necessary to perform that work in a correct and safe manner. However competence can only be judged to be adequate when the individual being trained has complete understanding of the language of training.
