Fires kill and injure hundreds of people in South Africa each year, and is also responsible for damage to property and diseases such as athma due to smoke inhalation. The Advanced Fire Information System (AFIS) was started in 2003 as a service module of the Wide Area Monitoring Information System. WAMIS aims to deliver fire information products to researchers, Fire Protection Agencies and Disaster managers all over Southern Africa in support of decision-making in the monitoring of fires. It is the first real time operational satellite fire monitoring system in Southern Africa.
